The use of the term 'Latinx' is enough to get me to vote against Proposal 1. When I search that proposal for the terms 'working class' or 'worker', the only thing I come up with is "devaluing and underpaying of immigrant workers". For the woke, identity is everything; class consciousness is nothing.
The preamble, in my view, is fine (preambles *should* be a declaration of values and goals, going back to the Framers, so the argument that it doesn't put food on the table is irrelevant to the question). And I'm inclined to support the cost-of-living question presuming that data would be actively used in pursuit of progressive policy.
But that new office in City Hall amendment is just the height of putting bureaucracy on top of bureaucracy, and departmental reports that go nowhere. Just pure words over actions, and likely at great expense that could instead go into direct services.
(BTW, Ross — what's your issue with Kendi? Every time you mention diversity consultants you lump him in, when he's a pretty well-regarded historian even pre-2020. Kind of a far cry from White Fragility.)
What is the problem with a points-based immigration system ? It gives a larger number of people a chance to immigrate based on education/work-experience/skills. The current US immigration system is based on family reunion - you need a US Citizen Immediate Relative/Family Member (for some a Permanent Resident) who will and can act as a sponsor to immigrate here. If you do not have a US Citizen relative your immigration requires a win in the Diversity Lottery (very, very small chance). Others who come do so on a letter-based non-immigrant system: an L-2 can work and meaningful volunteer, an H-4 cannot, she can only see her life rot away one day at a time. H-4's are mainly women and most of the time they come from India. So much for your "melting pot". So much for your Country of Opportunity.
Will Hochul-Zeldin be questioned tonight about the questions? Zeldin would probably oppose, try to pry away “un woke” nyc voters, and Hochul hummm equivocate (“up to nyc voters”), it could explode into a major issue, and a Zeldin plus… the “equity” tsar can be spun as quotas by another name, aren’t election’s wonderful…
