Back in a 2009 blog I compared Silver to Cardinal Richlieu,

https://mets2006.wordpress.com/2009/01/16/cardinal-richelieu-in-albany-can-shelly-silver-save-new-york-city-schools/

Shelly wielded power, and represented his members well, not only defending New York City Democrats from suburban and upstate Republicans but defending the Democrats from themselves. Yes, a curmudgeonly personality, an Orthodox Jew, also pro-abortion and a supporter of same sex marriage. Sadly he manipulated the system for his own benefit, as did Republican leaders Skelos and Bruno, today the manipulation of the system is far more sophisiticated, not legally corrupt, morally and ethially corrupt.

Today factions within the Democratic party are weakening the party, the cash bail laws, support for defund the police, not prosecute low level offenses are tearing the Demcoratic Party apart, with majorities in both house of the legislature and the governor''s mansion the Democratics may still face a "Red Wave" in November.

Jafferson, once on a pedestal with Washington, now an unrepentant slaveholder who attempted to undercut Washington and embarrass Hamilton, Silver, a corrupt elected who lined his own pockets and a leader who steered the legislature through the thicket of contentious politics .... a skill lacking today. Hopefully the ghost of Shelly still haunts the Assembly chamber.

A sad ending for him, perhaps, but a happy one for the people of New York. Once in a while, even powerful people who abuse their positions are brought to justice. That is a good thing.
