This is the most eclectic Democratic primary for NYC mayor that I remember. The candidates are all over the place with different experiences and backgrounds. Maybe the wildest ride since 1977.

I'm baffled by Yang choosing to run for mayor in a crowded field instead of running against Cuomo in the '22 primary (where he's still a longshot, but less so). What lane would he try to enter here that's already been filled? The DSA and DSA-adjacent bloc will probably move more toward Menchaca (and to a lesser extent due to the Julia Salazar endorsement, Stringer). The MOR technocrat lane is chock full with Donovan, Garcia, and McGuire. And Eric Adams is essentially going to own the centrist bloc (though Max Rose -- talk about baffling choices to run for mayor, as he'd probably win the SI Borough Presidency in a walk -- will get a few votes in the primary in SI).

Is Yang just assuming that (a) the Yang Gang is strong enough in NYC to create a ground game and (b) he's still got enough name recognition from the longest year ever to make it to people's top six on that alone? It all just seems like this is just something for him to do for a year, rather than a job he actively wants.
